Chapter 17

The two companions headed downstairs and refuelled. Fi made herself a black coffee and sweetened it with two sugars while she raided the biscuit tin and dug out a chunk of premium Welsh coal for her familiar.

“Are you ready to head back outside?” Fi asked the small wyrm around a mouth full of crumbly shortbread.

Now’s as good a time as any.

Fi offered Cressida her arm, and the wyrm hopped up onto the witch’s shoulder, a show of togetherness as they stepped out of the house. The door swung shut behind them and Fi screwed up her face as she heard the lock click into place. The house didn’t have any confidence in her magic.

Ursula sat on the wooden bench, a steaming cup of something in her hand, and…was she chatting with Timaeus? Fi strode over and slouched into the space next to the MLO agent.

“So, the demon realm really is frozen over? Oh, hello Fi, ready to do some more training.”

“Yep, we’re good, right Cressida?”

Right.

“Righto, let’s get back to work. Lovely to talk with you, Timaeus.” The donkey grunted and stalked off to nose for apples in the grass. “Right then, show me what you’ve got.”

Fi closed her eyes and felt inside her heart for the connection with Cressida. She found a slight tugging sensation and a feeling of pride coupled with trepidation. Fi pulled her magic to her hands and blasted a bolt of lightning at a block of ice. After three seconds, she cut off her power and forced it back down, shaking her hands at the enormous shock of electricity that had passed through them.

Ursula regarded the shards that scattered the lawn and quirked an eyebrow. “Thought you must be powerful, but let’s try a bit of finesse now, shall we? See if you can make a shape out of your magic.”

Fi frowned. “What do you mean?”

Ursula tipped her palm up, and a silvery glow coated her hand. She moved her fingers, and the magic formed the shape of a flower. “Magic is available to all magical beings. Some are limited, such as werewolves who have physical abilities but no way to manipulate magic, but all classes of witches, including wizards and warlocks, can shape magic to our needs. Our only limitation is the strength and source of our power. As you can see, I’m a weather witch, and my power is linked to the natural world, much like your mother’s. I can use it to affect the environment, although water and ice are my preferred elements.”

“Like forcing ice up from underground.”

“Precisely. But this is the elemental form of my magic, and I can will it to form any shape I imagine. It’s exactly what you do when you create the balls of electricity. They are spherical because you imagine them to be so.”

Fi’s brow crinkled. Her magic just formed a ball, it was hard to believe she had any control over it. Her scalp prickled as her hair lifted with the static from using her magic.
